Being a relative novice to growing veggies (though now the proud owner of the local Gardeners Association novice cup - my friends are all bored with hearing that one!) I had not realised that some veggies, well, just keep going forever. I thought you ate them then planted more. How wrong was I…
Now my well executed planting plan in the fabulous no-dig organic raised beds - a labour of love gifted by the capable man - is all to cock. The reason why? This fantastic stuff which I sowed last Autumn has given us steamed veggies, pretty salad leaves all winter long - and now its looking even more luxuriant than ever - just in the spot where the french beans were going.
This cool website for all mothers of veggies like me - the National Vegetable Society - refers to it as:
Spinach : Bordeaux F1 Hybrid
New breeding in spinach to provide stunning red stems and leaf veins contrasting against a darker green leaf. A sweeter flavour and the colour contrast provides a superb ’salad leaf ingredient’, as ‘baby spinach’ or as a steamed vegetable.
The mature leaves look like little Christmas trees - they are really charming! Here’s a photo of the babies when they came up last autumn - pretty little things. Well recommended. Even if I do have to go back to the drawing board on my planting plan!
